Choosing a Path Through the Catalog

The NKAGE Public Domain Literature Library holds 93 works, with four categories of nearly equal size: Historical Psychological Social Fiction, Fantasy Juvenile Worlds, Science Fiction Utopias, and Adventure Picaresque Fiction. Each of the three tools on this hub—Book Finder, Compare Books, and Reading Tracker—serves a different part of the journey from first interest to finished book.

Book Finder narrows the field, Compare Books lets you weigh two or three candidates side by side, and Reading Tracker turns a chosen book into a daily plan. Used together, they move you from a vague sense of what to read next to a concrete schedule you can follow.

Start with a Search

Book Finder is the natural entry point. With 35 short books and 35 quick reads, you can quickly find something manageable for a single sitting. If you have a specific theme in mind, the subject list helps: 49 books are tagged 'Short stories,' and smaller groups cover horror tales, Western stories, or life in Russia and the Pacific Area.

For example, Tales of the turf — Text and Context (id 302) is a short collection about horse racing, a subject that appears nowhere else in the catalog. A search by subject would surface it immediately, while a general browse might miss it.

Compare Before You Commit

Once you have a few candidates, Compare Books shows word count, estimated reading time, text sections, sentence flow, and chapter rhythm. These are descriptive facts, not quality judgments. A 20-minute story and a 500-minute collection serve different purposes, and seeing them side by side makes the trade-off explicit.

The catalog's median book is about 44,000 words, but the range is wide. Comparing a single-section story with a 30-section anthology reveals how much variety exists even within the same category.

Plan with the Tracker

Reading Tracker records progress in pages, not time or sections. If you set a daily page goal, it calculates estimated finish days based on your pace. This works well for a book like Tales of the turf — Text and Context, which has 8 text sections but no fixed page count; the tracker estimates pages from word count.

Because the tracker uses localStorage, your progress stays in your browser without an account. It is a private, low-friction way to keep a long anthology on schedule.
